Winter Program

The club is geared for both competitive and recreational freestyle skiers and the full winter program provides approx 45 training days on weekends and during school breaks from December 3rd, 2016  to early April 9th, 2017. In addition to the scheduled training days competing athletes will have coaching provided during 3 BC Timber Tour Competitions and the opportunity to compete at select other events such as BC Championships, Canadian Series, COT and Junior Nationals. Skiers meet at 8:50 am inside Glacier Creek Lodge on Blackcomb and ski from 9am – 3pm with a break for lunch from 11:15 – noon. Skiers are divided into different groups based on ability, age and training focus for that day. Athletes must be at least 11 years old (or Grade 6) at the time of registration to be able to participate and must be able to ski Black Diamond runs, be comfortable off medium jumps in the park and ready to compete at the Timber Tour level of competition. If your child is aged 12 or under and just starting out in Freestyle and skiing at the Super Youth competition level, please contact Whistler Blackcomb to participate in their Freestyle Development Programme, which will be more suitable.

The WBFSC is directed by Head Coach Jeff Fairbairn and focuses its program on the following three disciplines:

Moguls

Skiers will continue to develop the skills they have learned at the Freestylerz level, developing more advanced technique in the moguls, expanding their repertoire of tricks and building their speed and confidence. Coaches will work on all the fundamental skills as well as help advance the skiers’ competition readiness. Athletes can compete at the Timber Competition level, which includes 3 BC events this year in Apex, Whistler and Silverstar (BC Champs), with selected skiers going on to compete at Junior Nationals in Quebec later in the season. Our Performance Program with additional competition training days on Fridays and the  opportunity to compete at 2 higher level Canadian Series events is geared for our more serious competitors looking to make it onto the BC Team. Athletes from WBFSC have a longstanding history of success in the Mogul discipline. The club has seen several athletes go on to compete at international level, including Olympic gold and silver medallist Dale Begg-Smith.  Our club skiers have brought back medals from BC Championships and Junior Nationals.

Slopestyle

Whistler Blackcomb offers some of the best park facilities in the world, from beginner to advanced features.  Skiers will continue to develop the skills they have learned at the Freestylerz level, expanding their repertoire of tricks and building their confidence on rails and jumps. Our coaches have a high level of acrobatic literacy with a strong emphasis on safely progressing skiers’ air sense. Coaches will work on all the fundamental skills as well as help advance skiers’ competition readiness. Athletes can compete at the Timber Competition level, which includes 3 BC events this year in Apex, Whistler and Silverstar (BC Champs), with selected skiers going on to compete at Junior Nationals here in Whistler in early April.  Our Performance Program with additional competition training days on Fridays and the  opportunity to compete at 2 higher level Canadian Open events is geared for those skiers serious about making the BC Team.  Club skiers have consistently been on the podium the past few years at Timber Tour, BC Championships and Junior Nationals level. Several club members have gone on to represent Canada in the slopestyle discipline,  including 2014 Olympian Yuki Tsubota.
